TikTok for small business: a UK owner's honest playbook

Is TikTok worth it for your business? What to post, how often, and what to expect in the first 90 days.

We get asked this every week: "should I bother with TikTok?" This is the honest answer for UK small business owners in 2026 — including the businesses we'd tell not to.

Is TikTok worth it for your business?

Yes, if you're:

  • A local service business (trades, gyms, restaurants, salons, estate agents)
  • An ecommerce or DTC brand with visually interesting product
  • A founder with a strong personality or a niche point of view
  • Any business targeting under-40s

Probably not, if you're:

  • Selling to enterprise B2B decision-makers only
  • In a highly regulated industry with tight content restrictions
  • Not willing to post 3+ times a week for at least 90 days

What actually works

TikTok isn't Instagram with different filters. The content that ranks is:

  • Native-looking — filmed on a phone, minimal editing polish. Over-produced content flops.
  • Voice-led — talking directly to camera or voiceover, not silent aesthetic reels
  • Story-shaped — a setup, a middle, a payoff, in under 30 seconds
  • Riding a trend — trending audio or format, applied to your niche

How often should you post?

3–5 videos a week is the minimum for the algorithm to take you seriously. One a week is a hobby — TikTok will barely show your content at all. If that's not realistic for your team, get someone else to do it.

What to expect in the first 90 days

Days 1–30: videos will get 100–500 views. Do not panic. TikTok is figuring out who you're for.

Days 30–60: one or two videos start hitting 2k–10k views. Follower count starts moving.

Days 60–90: the first "hit" — a video does 30k+ views — and inbound DMs start coming through if your niche is service-oriented.

Nine out of ten accounts that "TikTok doesn't work for" quit at day 45. If you're going to start, commit to 90 days.

The one metric that matters

Not followers, not likes — average watch time. If your videos hold viewers for more than 50% of their length, TikTok will keep pushing them. Every other metric follows from that.

Takeaway

Bottom line: TikTok works for most consumer-facing UK small businesses if you commit to 3+ posts a week for 90 days. If you can't commit to that, don't start — post to Instagram Reels instead and get the same short-form muscle without the algorithmic penalty for inconsistency.
