Instagram Reels strategy for UK small businesses in 2026

Instagram Reels are still the single biggest lever a UK small business can pull for organic reach on Instagram — but the rules that worked in 2024 don't work in 2026. Here's what we're seeing across the accounts we manage.
The Instagram algorithm now weights the first 1.5 seconds harder than ever. If viewers don't stop scrolling in that window, the reel is dead — no matter how good the middle is.
What works:
What doesn't: "Hi guys!", a slow logo animation, a generic "in this video I'll show you...".
60–90 second reels get pushed on stats. But for small business accounts under 10k followers, 7–15 seconds outperforms almost every time — because watch-through rate is the metric the algorithm rewards, and shorter reels are easier to loop.
Rule of thumb: if a viewer watches your reel twice, the algorithm treats it as gold.
85% of Reels are watched on mute. If your value is in the audio and there's no on-screen text, most people will scroll past. Every reel should be watchable and understandable on silent.
Instagram officially recommends 3–5 hashtags now and we've seen accounts get penalised for stuffing 30. Pick one broad, one niche, one local, and the reel's exact topic. That's it.
Three decent reels a week outperform one perfect reel a month. The algorithm needs data to know who you're for — and data comes from volume. If you can't sustain three a week, drop to two — but never to one.
Bottom line: post 3 short reels a week, hook viewers in 1.5 seconds, put captions on-screen, keep hashtags to 5. Do that for 90 days and your reach will look different.
